SmartCleanup

How it works

The four steps, what the app looks for, what to know first, and the questions people ask.

How it works

Clean up in 4 steps

The app finds, you review and decide. Deleted something by mistake? You can get it back.

  1. Open the app to scan

Scanning starts as soon as you open the app. While your phone is charging, it keeps going in the background.

  2. Similar photos are grouped

Every group keeps one photo: the sharpest, or the one you marked as a Favorite.

  3. You take a look

Zoom in, or compare two photos side by side. Untick anything you want to keep.

  4. Delete, with a way back

Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted (iPhone) or Trash (Android 11 and later) for 30 days.

Android 10 and earlier have no trash for photos, so deleting is permanent. The app tells you before you confirm.

What it finds

What's taking up space on your phone

Each item has a label that shows how sure the app is. Only "Pre-selected" items are ticked for you.

Duplicates

  • Identical photos and videosPre-selected

The same file saved more than once. One copy is kept.

  • Copies of the same photoSuggested

Like a photo you sent in a chat and saved again, or one downloaded from the web.

Similar photos

  • Burst and back-to-back shotsPre-selected

Several shots taken within seconds. The best one is kept.

  • Look-alike photosSuggested

The same scene a few minutes apart. You may want to keep more than one.

  • Blurry, dark or accidental shotsSuggested

Shaky, too dark, or taken by accident in your pocket.

Screenshots

  • One-time code screenshotsPre-selected

Verification codes older than 7 days. They no longer work.

  • Old screenshotsSuggested

Older than 30 days. You can change this to 3 months, 6 months or a year.

  • Banking, receipts, tickets, QR codesInfo only

Recognized and never suggested for deletion.

  • Screen recordings and very short clipsSuggested

Including clips under 2 seconds recorded by accident.

  • Videos saved from TikTok, Facebook…Suggested

Videos you downloaded from social media.

  • Videos over 100 MBInfo only

Sorted by size, so you can see the biggest ones.

Chat and downloads

  • Photos from WhatsApp, Messenger, Zalo…Suggested

On Android, photos you sent are pre-selected.

Save space

  • Compress videosInfo only

4K videos are reduced to Full HD. Much smaller, with the date and albums kept.

  • Live Photos to regular photos (iPhone)Info only

Removes the short video attached to the photo and keeps the photo.

Files (Android)

  • Duplicate filesPre-selected

Pick a folder to clean and the app finds files that are exact copies.

  • Large files and old downloadsInfo only

Files over 100 MB, or sitting in Downloads for more than 90 days.

In the free version, some items need to be selected by hand instead of being pre-selected.

Good to know before you start

  • iCloud photos are deleted everywhereWith iCloud Photos on, deleting on your iPhone also removes the photo from your iPad and Mac. The app reminds you first.
  • Empty the trash to free up spaceDeleted photos still take up space in Recently Deleted or Trash until you empty it.
  • Other apps' caches can't be clearediOS and Android don't allow it. On Android, the app shows which apps use the most cache.
  • "Suggested" items can be wrongFor look-alike photos, blurry shots and social videos, the app is making a guess. That's why they're never ticked for you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens on your phone. There are no servers and no account.

Does the app delete photos by itself?

No. It only makes suggestions. Photos are deleted only when you tap Delete and confirm.

Is it free?

Yes. The free version scans your whole phone, shows every suggestion, and lets you delete up to 5 items a day that you pick yourself. Exact duplicates don't count toward that limit. Pro removes the limit, selects suggested items for you across a whole category, and unlocks video compression. Pro is available monthly, yearly, or as a one-time purchase. There are no ads.

What if I delete something by mistake?

On iPhone, open Photos → Recently Deleted; photos stay there for 30 days. On Android 11 and later, they go to Trash. Android 10 and earlier have no trash, so deleted photos can't be recovered.

I deleted photos, so why is my storage still full?

They're still in Recently Deleted or Trash. Empty it and the space is freed right away.

Can I let the app see only some of my photos?

Yes. When the app asks for access, choose to allow only selected photos. The app will only see those.

Will it drain my battery?

Hardly. Heavy scanning only runs while charging, and the app pauses when the battery is low or the phone gets hot.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 15 or later, and Android phones and tablets with Android 7.1 or later. The app is available in English, Vietnamese and Japanese and follows your phone's language.
