SmartCleanup analyses your photos on the phone and uploads none of them. This page sets out the permissions it asks for, what data it keeps and where, and when your phone uses the network while you use the app.

1. The principle

SmartCleanup analyses your photos, videos and files on your phone. The app does not upload photos, videos, files or analysis results anywhere — not to our servers, because we run no server for this app.

There is no account, no login, no advertising, no behavioural analytics, and no crash reporting to any server. The rest of this page spells that out, including one small exception on Android that we want you to know about.

2. Permissions the app asks for

On iPhone and iPad

  • Photo library access — to read and analyse your photos and videos. You can choose "Limited Access": the app then sees only the photos you pick.
  • Add to photo library — used only when you compress a video or turn a Live Photo into a still, to save the new copy back to your library.
  • Background processing — to keep scanning while the phone charges. Nothing for you to grant; you can turn it off in the app's Settings.

On Android

  • Photos and videos — to read and analyse your library. From Android 14 you can allow only some photos. On Android 10 and earlier this is the storage read/write permission, needed to delete the photos you selected.
  • All files access — only in the full Android edition, for the Files section. The Google Play edition does not ask for it; it reads only a folder you pick through the system's folder picker.
  • Usage access — optional; only to show each app's cache size. The app does not read which apps you use, or when.

Permissions SmartCleanup does not ask for: location, contacts, microphone, camera, messages, notifications. The app reads the location already stored in a photo so it does not group two shots taken in different places, but it never asks where you are.

3. What the app holds, and where

Each entry is a kind of data the app really has. The part worth reading is the label: does it ever leave the phone.

  • Your photos, videos and files

    Stays on the phone

    They stay where they are, in Photos (iPhone) or on the phone's storage (Android). The app reads them to analyse them, copies them nowhere, and deletes only what you selected and confirmed.

  • Analysis results

    Stays on the phone

    Hashes, sharpness and exposure scores, face counts, the image features used for comparison, groups and suggestions — in the app's own database on the phone. No face images are stored, and nobody is identified.

  • Text read from screenshots

    Stays on the phone

    Up to 2 KB of text per image, kept in the app's database to tell a one-time code from a banking screen, a receipt or a ticket. The reading runs on the phone.

  • Cleanup history

    Stays on the phone

    The date, item count, space, category and a fingerprint (hash) of each deleted item — never the photo itself. In the app's database.

  • Settings and exclusions

    Stays on the phone

    The thresholds you changed, and the photos, albums or folders you told the app to skip. On the phone.

  • ML Kit's technical metrics (Android)

    Leaves the phoneto Google, without photos

    Google's face-detection, text- and barcode-recognition libraries run on the phone, but report metrics about their own performance and usage to Google. No photos, recognised text or analysis results are included.

Uninstalling the app removes all analysis results, history and settings from the phone. Your photos are unaffected — they were never inside the app.

4. When the app reaches outside the phone

The app does not send your data anywhere. There are two cases where your phone uses the network while you use the app, and we list both.

The ML Kit libraries on Android

To detect faces (for the open-eyes score), read text on screenshots and recognise QR codes, the Android app uses Google's ML Kit. The models ship inside the app and run on the phone: photos are not sent anywhere to be analysed.

However, by Google's own documentation, ML Kit may contact Google's servers to receive bug fixes and hardware-compatibility information, and sends metrics about the performance and usage of the ML Kit APIs. Google uses those metrics to measure performance, debug, and detect misuse. We do not receive them, and they do not contain your photos or the text in them.

On iPhone and iPad, the same jobs are done by Apple's Vision framework, on the device, without any such reporting.

Original photos in iCloud (iPhone, iPad)

By default, photos that live only in iCloud are analysed from the thumbnails already on the phone. If you allow full downloads in the app's Settings, the system downloads the original from your own iCloud to the phone, just as it does when you open that photo in Photos. The download is between your phone and Apple; we are not involved.

5. Deleting photos, and deleting data

The app deletes only the photos, videos and files you selected and confirmed. On iPhone, the system shows its own confirmation and photos go to Recently Deleted for 30 days. On Android 11 and later, photos go to the system trash by default. On Android 7.1 to 10, and for files in the Files section, deletion is permanent.

There is nothing for you to ask us to delete, because we hold none of your data. Uninstalling the app removes everything the app stored on the phone.

6. Children

The app collects no personal data from anyone, children included. It has no adult content, no social features, and nothing users post for other users to see.

7. When this policy changes

If a new version ever needs to send data out for a new reason, this page will be changed before that version ships, at the same time as the declarations on the App Store and Google Play. The date at the top of the page is the last time it changed.
